European outdoor market continues to grow

The European Outdoor Group (EOG) has published the first results of this year’s “State of Trade”, the group’s annual report on the European outdoor market. In wholesale terms, the market grew by 2.8 percent in volume and by 3.1 percent in value in 2013, compared with the previous year. As a result, sell-in clocked up €4.8 billion, while retail sales exceeded €10 billion.

The fastest growing categories, in value terms, were footwear (+5.2 percent) and packs (+2.7 percent), followed by apparel (+2.5 percent), accessories (+2.3 percent) and climbing gear (+1.6 percent). Tents, in turn, fell by 0.7 percent.

U.K. and southern Europe recovery

After a difficult few years, both southern Europe and the U.K. showed signs of recovery. According to the report, the fastest growth regions were, eastern Europe and Russia, while the Nordic and German-speaking countries experienced another year of solid growth.
