British police raids SDI offices in Rangers case

glasgow_rangersU.K. police authorities have raided the headquarters of British retailer and wholesaler Sports Direct International (SDI). It was confirmed, however, that the investigations are not related to SDI’s operations as such, but the involvement of its strong man, Mike Ashley, at the Glasgow Rangers soccer club.

Ashley holds altogether, directly and indirectly 9 percent of shares in the Scottish soccer team, but Scotland’s football federation prevented Ashley from increasing his share up to 30 percent last fall. The Scottish Football Association sensed a certain conflict of interest. The problem was apparently that Ashley got some advantageous deals because of his control of the club’s merchandising. While Ashley’s nominal share in the club is relatively small, it was said that his power is substantial after he granted loans to the iconic soccer team.
